Note: Five reporting periods are included here: 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. In 2000, the reporting of annual safety data greatly improved as a result of FTA outreach through audits, technical assistance and the SSO annual workshop.

  • Other rail ridership decreased for the third consecutive year.
  • Light rail ridership increased by 10.4% from 2003 to 2004.

  • Total rail transit accidents have increased between 1999 and 2004
  • The large increase in 2004 can be attributed to an increase of over 1,000 "other" accidents, such as slips, trips, and falls.

Collision Rates: 1999 to 2004, per 10M Passenger Trips

Derailment and Fire Rates: 1999 to 2004, per 10M Passenger Trips
  • The rail transit collision rate has decreased between 1999 and 2004.
  • Derailment and fire rates both fell over 50% from 2003 to 2004.

  • The accident rates for all modes have increased between 1999 and 2004.

Heavy Rail Accidents by Type: 1999 to 2003 per 10M Passenger Trips

  • The heavy rail collision rate has decreased since 1999
  • The heavy rail derailment and fire rates have decreased from 2003 to 2004

Light Rail Collisions and "Other" Accidents: 1999 to 2003, per 10M Passenger Trips
  • The light rail collision rate has decreased from 1999.
  • The light rail collision rate decreased in 2004 from 2003.

Fatalities:

Reported Fatalities*: 1999 to 2003

* excluding suicides and trespassing-related deaths
  • The fatalities reported in 2004 were the highest in the past six years. This total of 57 is higher than the average of 39.7.

  • Fatalities due to collisions have decreased between 1999 and 2004.
  • Fatalities due to "Other" accidents have increased between 1999 and 2004.

Reported Injuries due to "Other" Accidents: 1999 to 2004
  • The collision injury rate has remained relatively stable between 1999 and 2004.
  • Injuries due to "Other" accidents increased in 2004 after a three-year decrease in reported injuries.

Heavy Rail Injuries by Type: 1999 to 2003 per 10M Passenger Trips
  • The heavy rail collision and fire injury rates have decreased since 1999.
  • The heavy rail derailment rate increased in 2004 after two consecutive years with no reported derailment-related injuries.
