The National Transit Institute (NTI) is presenting a FREE T-Class, Policies and Practices for Effectively and Efficiently Meeting ADA Paratransit Demand, based on Transit Cooperation Research Program (TCRP) Synthesis Report 74, is being repeated twice to give everyone a chance to participate on December 4, 2008 2:00pm - 3:30pm EST or January 22, 2009 2:00pm - 3:30pm EST. In cooperation with the TCRP and the American Public Transportation Association, each year these T-Classes highlight specific TCRP reports, addressing current topics and trends in the transit industry. This offering will be of interest to transit agency managers and paratransit managers and their staffs, as well as other professionals who deliver paratransit service.
This synthesis report examines a wide range of practices that transit agencies are using to provide paratransit service more effectively and efficiently. The report consists of responses from 124 transit agencies to a selected survey effort and the findings from telephone interviews with staff at 17 transit agencies who described policies and practices they found to be innovative and/or potentially useful to others. The T-Class will be presented by the report’s principal investigator, David Chia of Planners Collaborative, Inc., of Boston. Discussion topics include:
- Policies and practices that can be employed, often at little cost in funding or personnel
- The results of surveys and interviews cited in the study
- A review of case studies to learn about innovative policies and procedures being undertaken at agencies across the country
- Practices and technologies still in development, or yet to be extensively tested
The T-Class lasts 90 minutes and is delivered in a telephone conference format. Expert panelists discuss the topics during the first 60 minutes of the teleconference; the last 30 minutes are dedicated to open phones for questions from the audience.
