On April 8, 2010, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) published a notification for the Sustainable Communities Planning Grant. The grant program is intended to support multijurisdictional regional planning efforts that integrate housing, economic development and transportation decision-making. The program could provide an opportunity for Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) to expand their efforts related to sustainable/livable community planning.
The notice requested entities interested in applying to notify HUD of their intent to submit an application. Interested organizations were asked to call the HUD Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) Information Center as soon as possible. Notification of intent to apply is not a requirement for application, but it will help HUD determine staffing requirements for review and evaluation of applicants. Since MPOs are not typically grantees of HUD funding, we would encourage you to notify HUD if you decide to pursue a grant.
In addition, the notice encouraged interested entities to begin the grants.gov registration process now as the full 5-step process can take 2-4 weeks to complete. For details about grants.gov registration and how to submit notification of intent, please visit http://www.hud.gov/offices/adm/grants/nofa10/sustaincomm.cfm.
