On Friday, August 4, 2006, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) launched its redesigned public website, www.fta.dot.gov. The focus of the redesign has been to improve the public website’s organization and navigation in support of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), and to better serve you, our customer. Over a 10-month period beginning in October of 2005, an internal FTA working group consisting of headquarters and regional staff met weekly to restructure the site, update the look & feel, and develop guidance for ongoing maintenance and upkeep. Stakeholder input was obtained throughout various phases of development and incorporated into the final redesign. Our goal was to create a site that has a clean and efficient layout and design, user-friendly navigation, and that provides up-to-date, accurate information to grantees, stakeholders, and the public.
The redesigned website incorporates new features including:
- Updated layout and design
- Summary text explaining information available within each section
- Improved Google search engine with links to advanced features and help
- Primary navigation on the left with a map that links to FTA Regional Office information
- Home page text describing FTA’s purpose
- Section for “In the Spotlight” to highlight current FTA projects & initiatives
- Pages are fully expandable (fill the whole page) to minimize scrolling
- Circulars have been reformatted so that they can be printed out easily
- Image banners that appear at the top of every page, site tools in headers and footers
- Enhanced Contact Us form
Additional features that we brought over from the old website and included in the new design:
- Breadcrumb trail allowing users to go to previous pages without repeatedly hitting “Back”
- Home page image changes for each visit to the site
- “Last Updated” date displayed on each page throughout the site
- Printer-friendly versions of all pages
