Transportation initiatives have been implemented around the country with varying degrees of success. Although many of these programs are new, some states have been operating programs long enough to evaluate their progress. Transportation alternatives designed to meet the needs of urban, suburban and rural communities are discussed in this document, including vanpool services, fixed route enhancements, school buses, emergency ride home programs, employer involvement, reimbursement programs and organizing resource centers. Transportation alternatives should be developed based on the needs of the target population and employers in each community. The outcome of these services should promote self-sufficiency, be sustainable over the long run, and maximize the use of existing services.
