Q. Is there an FTA document that defines the level of detail that must be accomplished for bus "refurbishing”, "rehabilitation”, and "remanufacturing"? Years ago I thought there was such a document that specified that this type of work should result in an extended life of xx years.
A. A project for the "remanufacture" of buses was defined as the "structural restoration of a standard, heavy-duty bus in addition to installation of new or rebuilt major components to extend its service life at least eight years”. (FTA Circular C 9030.1A, September 18, 1987], paragraph IV-4). That language has since been replaced by FTA Circular 5010.1D, November 1, 2008 (http://www.fta.dot.gov/documents/C_5010_1D_Finalpub.pdf). See Chapter IV, Subsection 3.g., "Rolling Stock Rebuilding Policies”, and Chapter IV, Subsection 3.h., "Rolling Stock Overhauls”. Note: This Q/A was posted the month of: 03-2009.
