Office of Safety Review

The Office of Safety Review is responsible for establishing the framework for coordinated and cooperative review of safety activities within FTA, in accordance with the new Safety Management System (SMS) approach.

This office reviews, oversees, and maintains transit safety policy compliance and monitoring compliance of technical assistance to transit industry stakeholders.

In the Office of Safety Review, the following report to the Director: Drug & Alcohol Compliance, Emergency Management, and Transit Safety Oversight.

Sean ThompsonAs the Director of the Office of Safety Review, Sean manages the FTA Drug & Alcohol, Emergency Management, and Transit Safety Oversight requirements under the current transit safety program as well as new requirements under MAP-21.

Sean Thompson has worked exclusively in the transportation industry since 1995. Sean has extensive experience with light rail and heavy rail transit operations, as well as experience with commuter rail and freight railroad operations in both new and established systems. Throughout his career Sean has held positions as a bus operator, bus dispatcher, light rail operations supervisor, light rail controller, commuter rail operations supervisor, commuter rail and freight dispatcher, rail operations chief, and rail training manager. Serving as a Deputy Regional Administrator for the Federal Railroad Administrationís Region 7, in Sacramento, California, Sean also gained in-depth safety regulatory experience.
