New York and New Jersey
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) invests in building the capacity and improving the quality of public transportation throughout the United States. FTA's Region 2 office provides grant support and guidance on environmental, planning and other critical elements for metropolitan planning organizations, public transit operators, and local and state governments in the states of New York and New Jersey.
Projects in Region 2 are typically large in scale and scope and often involve complex coordination given the myriad of stakeholders involved. Region 2 provides oversight for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s East Side Access and Second Avenue Subway projects which are two of the largest transit infrastructure projects in the country. Region 2 also provides oversight on the $2.8 billion World Trade Center Transportation Transit Hub and the $1.2 billion Fulton Center projects which receive funds as part of the FY 2002 Supplemental Appropriations Act for Further Recovery and Response to Terrorist Attacks on the United States.
FTA's Region 2 office is responsible for an $18.2 billion portfolio of federal funds in nearly 400 active grants, awarding on average $2.5 billion in grants annually. This portfolio is managed by 30 staff disseminated across the following four offices:
Located in the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House in lower Manhattan, Region 2 also houses the New York Metropolitan Office, which includes staff from the Federal Highway Administration – New York Division Office, and is designed to facilitate direct federal assistance to transportation projects in New York City.
In Fiscal Year 2012 (ending September 30, 2012), Region 2 awarded 111 grants totaling $2,432,818,473. This represents nearly 20 percent of the total of $12,881,429,560 in support provided by all of FTA in FY 2012. In addition, the Lower Manhattan Recovery Office awarded two grants totalling $673,221,191 in FY 2012. This funding has aided in planning, developing, and sustaining a variety of transportation projects in communities throughout the Region.
Our goals are to provide unparalleled customer service to grantees as well as the public and to ensure that awarded grant funds ultimately enhance the operations, safety, and security of transit systems for their users by providing operationally safe equipment and facilities.
Region 2 works closely with metropolitan planning organizations, public transit agencies, local governments, the New York State Department of Transportation, and New Jersey Transit to support transit investments in communities througout the states of New York and New Jersey.
Major metropolitan areas within Region 2's jurisdiction include New York City, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Utica in New York; as well as Atlantic City, Newark, and Trenton in New Jersey. Region 2, in partnership with our colleagues in Region 3, also covers the Philadelphia suburbs of southern New Jersey served by New Jersey Transit.
Region 2 currently manages 47 active grantees with 94% of its portfolio being distributed amongst its five largest grantees, which are:
In addition, Region 2 supports critical investments in public transportation for smaller, rural, and tribal communities throughout the states of New York and New Jersey.
