WASHINGTON – The much anticipated Downtown Dallas Streetcar project is a step closer to reality as the result of a grant agreement signed by the Federal Transit Administration and the North Central Texas Council of Governments, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today.  The project received $23 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) program.

“The Dallas streetcar project is another great example of how the Recovery Act is creating jobs and providing accessible transportation,” Secretary LaHood said.  “Residents will soon be able to take the streetcar to work or shopping downtown.  It will also provide a direct connection to light rail and commuter rail at Union Station.”

The Downtown Dallas Streetcar will run along Main Street through the largest job center in the North Texas area with a stop at Union Station, providing access to Dallas Area Rapid Transit Authority (DART) light rail service, and to the Trinity Railway Express between Dallas and Fort Worth.

“In addition to creating much-needed jobs for workers in Dallas, this proposed streetcar line will advance economic growth in downtown neighborhoods by linking them with major employment centers throughout the region,” said Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff.

The streetcar route also includes stops at the Dallas Convention Center and Hotel, Trinity River Park, Methodist Medical Center, the Oak Cliff Gateway area and many residential areas.

In addition to the Dallas project, transit projects in Detroit, Tucson, Ariz., New Orleans, Portland, Ore., and the Washington, D.C. area were recently awarded grants ranging from $23 million to $63 million from the Recovery Act’s TIGER program.
