The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced a $1.5 million grant to Georgetown Partnership, Inc. for its Job Access/Reverse Commute program and $6.2 million grant to the National Academy of Sciences for its Transit Cooperative Research Program.

“Transit is a lifeline to a strong economy, carrying millions of commuters to work each day, said FTA Administrator Jennifer L. Dorn. Today’s investment will better connect workers to jobs, ease congestion and help Washington, DC take advantage of the rapidly growing economy.”

Georgetown Partnership, Inc.will use the $1.5 million for its Job Access shuttle, which provides service from the Georgetown area of D.C. to the Metrorail system during non-rush hours and weekends. The service provides 13,000 commuters a day with access to job sites and employment opportunities within Georgetown’s commercial district.

The National Academy of Sciences will use the $6.5 million in funding to manage its Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP). TCRP, now in its thirteenth year, conducts research and studies that are used within the transit industry to improve the operations and management of the nation’s transportation systems.

Since the inception of the Job Access and Reverse Commute program, the Bush Administration has funded 237 state and local grantees in 46 states, making it possible for welfare recipients, low-income individuals and reverse commuters to access jobs.
