Under Budget And On Time: FTA Joins Local And State Officals For Opening Of Memphis Trolley Line

As part of an ongoing effort to improve transportation throughout downtown Memphis, Federal Transit Deputy Administrator Robert Jamison today joined Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton and state and local officials in the ceremonial opening of the Madison Avenue line. Delivered under budget and on time, the new line provides for the first time, rail access between two of the cities largest employment centers, the Central Business District in Downtown Memphis and the Medical Center.

During a ceremony at the new Cleveland Station, Deputy Administrator Jamison stressed the connection between efficient transportation systems and a growing economy. “With public transportation comes economic opportunity and independence.  Well conceived and designed public transit projects improve the customer’s quality of life” he said.

The Madison Avenue Line is a two-mile extension to the existing Main Street-Riverfront Trolley Loop track, which operates along the Mississippi River serving the central business district and downtown landmarks. Three additional refurbished vintage trolleys and one new replica vehicle will supplement the existing fleet of fourteen to create a system reminiscent of public transit during the early 20th century. Included in the project are six new stations and a 61-space park and ride lot. The ADA accessible system expects to see ridership increase from 2,100 daily riders this year to 4,200 riders by 2020. The project was completed ahead of schedule and $19 million under budget.

In addition to the Madison Avenue line, Memphis Area Transit Authority’s regional transportation plan includes a future light rail line from the Medical District to Memphis International Airport, which will provide service to all three major employment centers.
