Know Where You're Going
Buy a Token or a Fare Card
To get to the trains, you'll have to pay a fare using either a token or a fare card. You can buy tokens or fare cards from a vending machine.
Go Through the Gates/Turnstiles
Deposit your token in the turnstile slot, or slide your fare card through the swipe-reader, and walk through. People in wheelchairs may use a special gate.
Wait for Your Train
Get on the Correct Train
The front and the side of every train displays the route number/letter.
Board the train after the people who want to get off have exited. Be careful of the gap between the platform and the train. If you reach the platform when subway car doors are closing, don't try to keep them from closing.
If you can't find a seat, hold onto a railing. For your safety, please don't lean against the doors.
Know When You Need to Get Off
Operators make announcements to tell you the next stop along the line. To be sure that you're going in the right direction, you can look at a map. Every subway car has a map posted on the wall.
When the train reaches the station you want and the doors open, step carefully from the train onto the platform. Then follow the signs toward the exit. In most stations, you can exit by walking through the turnstiles.
