Environmental Justice Training Course
FTA is pleased to announce the first pilot offering of our Environmental Justice training course on July 23-24, 2014, held in Chicago, IL.
Development of this training is sponsored by FTA’s Office of Planning and Environment in cooperation with the National Transit Institute. The training is intended to serve as guidance for practitioners, reviewers, and grantees on effective ways for integrating the consideration of Environmental Justice impacts throughout the transportation planning and project development / NEPA processes.
This training is designed to meet the needs of our grantees, while satisfying the requirements of Executive Order 12898 and U.S. DOT Order 5610.2(a) on Environmental Justice. The pilot is strictly limited to State DOT staff, RPO/MPO staff, and transit agency/provider staff.

Guidance on Environmental Justice Principles
FTA’s Environmental Justice Circular, which became effective on August 15, 2012, is the first stand-alone guidance we’ve issued to address the intent of the 1994 Executive Order on Federal Actions To Address Environmental Justice in Minority Populations and Low-Income Populations. The circular is meant to ensure that FTA funding recipients avoid, minimize, or mitigate disproportionately high and adverse health and environmental effects, including social and economic effects, on minority populations and low-income populations. FTA funding recipients are also required to incorporate EJ principles into transportation planning and decision-making processes as well as project-specific environmental reviews.
