South Miami-Dade Busway
Project Description
The busway extension project will be a continuation of the existing South Miami-Dade Busway further south, to the Cities of Homestead and Florida City. The extension will be divided into three segments: Northern Segment (5 miles), Central Segment (3.75 miles), and Southern Segment (2.73 miles). The Florida DOT is working on right-of-way acquisition. The MDTA is studying traffic signalization with the County Public Works Department. A consultant is preparing a Project Management plan.
 The extension will be similar to the existing South Miami-Dade Busway, which is an exclusive, two-lane, two-direction, 8.5-mile, at-grade transit facility which runs from the Dadeland South Metrorail station to the Cutler Ridge neighborhood. Operations on the Busway started in February 1997. The busway is located within the former Florida East Coast Railroad corridor and was designed to be used exclusively by transit buses, along with emergency and security vehicles. There are 16 intersections and 15 on-line stations in each direction. The busway corridor over much of its length is within 100 feet of the west side of US 1, one of the most heavily traveled corridors in Dade. Busway service includes the busway local, serving busway stations only, the busway express, which makes limited stops on the busway during peak periods and continues further south beyond the end of the current busway, and several other routes which use the busway for a portion of their service.
A consultant completed work on a Busway/Grade Separation analysis for the existing busway. The analysis included a study of three alternatives: elevated structure, depressed by-pass, and at-grade warning devices and signals. Short, medium and long term crash countermeasures were recommended.
