Accessing the Global Marketplace: A Resource Guide for the Transit Industry is the first comprehensive resource guide issued by the new FTA International Mass Transportation Program (IMTP), in cooperation with the American Public Transit Association (APTA). The resource guide is designed to help medium and small U.S. firms remain internationally competitive by offering them opportunities to expand their market base abroad. The guide begins by introducing the transit IMTP, including its goals, conferences and trade shows, and communications and publications. The next Chapters 3-5 discuss where to start and who to contact, how to conduct general market research (where and what to export), and how to focus that research (pinpoint the export products). Chapters 6-7 of this guide provide information on how to promote and sell the company's products and services abroad and the type of project financing available. Chapter 8 identifies the sources available, like the Advocacy Center, to help ensure the company is treated fairly. Chapter 9 provides tips on conducting business abroad in such areas as travel and language. The remaining chapters list other organizations and contacts that may be useful, including state governments, state government representatives located abroad, and Internet websites. This resource guide is a good starting point for small and medium sized businesses to enter the global marketplace as a viable competitor, marketing U.S. transportation products and services abroad. The IMTP office encourages firms to contact FTA for more information, phone 202.366.4052, or by email at [IMTP@dot.gov]. 99-1055
