Region 2

Profile

The Region 2 office manages a portfolio of about 57 grantees with more than 400 active projects representing a net federal investment of approximately $17.9 billion. Located in the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House in lower Manhattan, Region 2 also houses the New York Metropolitan Office, which includes staff from the Federal Highway Administration – New York Division Office, and is designed to facilitate direct federal assistance to transportation projects in New York City. Another Region 2 office, the Lower Manhattan Recovery Office (LMRO), was established in 2002 to carry out the rebuilding and enhancement of public transit system facilities in lower Manhattan in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center.

Who We Serve

Region 2 works closely with transit agencies, local governments, the New York State Department of Transportation, and New Jersey Transit to support transit investments in communities througout the states of New York and New Jersey.

Major metropolitan areas within Region 2's jurisdiction include New York City, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Utica  in New York; as well as Atlantic City, Newark, and Trenton in New Jersey.  Region 2, in partnership with our colleagues in Region 3, also covers the Philadelphia suburbs of Southern New Jersey served by New Jersey Transit.

In addition, Region 2 supports critical investments in public transportation for smaller, rural, and tribal communities throughout the states of New York and New Jersey.

What We Do

The Federal Transit Administration invests in building the capacity and improving the quality of public transportation throughout the United States. Region 2 provides grant support and guidance on environmental, planning and other critical elements for metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), transit operators, and local and state governments.

In Fiscal Year 2012 (ending September 30, 2012), Region 2 awarded 111 grants totaling $2,432,818,473. This represents nearly 20 percent of the total of $12,881,429,560 in support provided by all of FTA in FY 2012. In addition, the LMRO awarded two grants totalling $673,221,191 in FY 2012.

This funding has aided in planning, developing, and sustaining a variety of transportation projects in communities throughout the Region. Our goals are to provide unparalleled customer service to grantees as well as the public and to ensure that awarded grant funds ultimately enhance the operations, safety, and security of transit systems for their users by providing operationally safe equipment and facilities.
