Line 22 Rapid Transit Corridor

Project Description
The 26-mile Line 22 corridor is the backbone of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) bus system. VTA plans to develop this route as a Bus Rapid Transit Corridor. Currently, Line 22 runs on 10-minute headways during weekday peak hours and operates near capacity, with 28,000 riders daily (18% of total system ridership). Twenty-four hour service was implemented in January 1998. VTA will run articulated buses on the line beginning in 2002.

Phase One of the BRT service, called Rapid 522, was launched in July 2005.  Travel times have decreased as much as 25% compared to Line 22.  VTA operates both standard 40-foot and articulated 60-foot low-floor buses along the corridor.  Bus Signal Priority (BSP) was installed at 55 intersections to extend green traffic signals or reduce the red phase of traffice signals when a bus is approaching.  Stops are spaced approximately one-half mile apart along Rapid 522, compared to stop spacing of one-quarter mile apart for local bus service.  Rapid 522 operates at 15-minute headways and travel as fast as traffic allows, meaning that buses do not sit idle when ahead of published time schedules.  Queue-jump lanes are located at Page Mill Road and Arastradero in Palo Alto.  Rapid 522 buses are fully accessible in accordance with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA).

Future phases include expanded BRT service in Santa Clara County.  Stevens Creek Boulevard and Monterey Highway have been identified as potential BRT corridors.  Future improvements will include permanent rail-like stations, more BSP intersections, real-time passenger information at station displays and through wireless modes, new higher capacity vehicles, exclusive bus lanes, and off-vehicle fare payment.
