Area Explanation
Route Contra Costa College in San Pablo, to Jack London Square in Oakland, primarily along San Pablo Avenue.
Length of route 16 miles (through seven cities), traveling through a State Highway under Caltrans jurisdiction.
Interagency cooperation

The project is coordinated through the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (ACCMA), the lead agency responsible for design, implementation, and operations of the San Pablo SMART Corridor. The ACCMA established a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and Policy Advisory Committee (PAC). The TAC is composed of staff from the seven cities, Caltrans, ACCMA, MTC, AC Transit, BART, Port of Oakland, and other agencies.

Internal organization

AC Transit staff includes a Project Manager who coordinates with an in-house Drivers Committee, Maintenance, Marketing, Operations, Planning, and Training Departments.

Number of stops 25 individual stops averaging .64 miles apart.
Type of stops

Shared rapid and local; all Rapid stops will have unique design elements that will easily identify them to the public.

Type of buses New 40-foot, low-floor, 3-door Van Hool (Belgium); exterior of bus with unique Rapid design.
Bus arrival information

NextBus system at all Rapid shelters. NextBus is a system that uses satellite technology to track a bus along its route.

Schedule 12 minutes peak, 15 minutes off-peak; 6amó7pm Monday through Saturday.
Traffic signal priority

Headway-based, utilizes Opticom system. Opticom systems are typically used by emergency vehicles such as firetrucks to expedite movement through traffic lights.

Current ridership 13,000 in the corrridor.
Start-up date June 2003.
Critical path issues

Timely delivery of Van Hool buses; Traffic signals must be interconnected to help ensure signal coordination through the corridor.

Future plans

At least two more trunk routes, preferably four, which run Rapid Buses.
